Based on the ISO 9000 series the automobile manufacturers have compiled their requirements in their own series. The association of German automobile manufacturers (Verband der deutschen Automobilhersteller VDA) drew up the VDA volumes (e.g. VDA 6.1), the U.S. manufacturers (Chrysler, GM, Ford) outlined their requirements for qualified suppliers in the QS9000 series.

After the merger of the companies Daimler-Benz and Chrysler to form the current DaimlerChrysler group the two independent norms were combined in the TS16949:1999. The revision of the ISO 9000 series and, as a consequence, the introduction of a process-oriented approach (ISO 9000:2000) resulted in a re-structuring of the TS16949:1999. The current process-oriented version TS16949:2009 was created.
